Project Description:

Over the course of several years, United Technologies Corporation relocated their corporate headquarters from the “Gold Building” in Hartford, Connecticut to a multi-building, suburban campus in Farmington, Connecticut.  This 600,000 square foot campus supports a majority of the corporate functions for UTC, including the offices for the CEO and his direct reports. One of the many amenities that employees enjoy at the Farmington Campus is an Employee Fitness Center.  This new 12,210 square foot facility was constructed in an area which had previously been used as office space.

For the workout experience to feel like something special, it was important for the facility to have a distinctive look apart from the rest of the office.  In order to emphasize the different feel of the “nonwork” Fitness Center space, the overhead structure and ductwork were exposed and industrial light fixtures were used to make the spaces feel very different from the “work” space.

This larger Fitness Center includes a separate Spin Room as well as state-of-the-art Cardio and Weight Training equipment.  The dedicated Group Exercise Room includes a large storage area as well as a TRX Suspension Training System.  One of the challenges to address in the design of this facility was its location directly below UTC’s Human Resources Group.  Multiple strategies were employed to minimize both sound and noise transmission.
